Vera Wang Will Skip NYFW Next Season for Two Very Good Reasons

Few designers are more iconic than Vera Wang. The New York City–born legend has lines that span across ready-to-wear, bridal, and menswear: solidifying her place as one of the most well-known and beloved brands all around the world.

Her shows have been a staple in the Big Apple for more than two decades, but she’s ditching the fashion capital for another: She will show her next collection in France on the first day of Paris Fashion Week. But this won’t be her normal catwalk presentation—Wang is swapping the in-person runway show for a film.

In a statement to WWD, the designer revealed that the movie will be “a bit of an ode to Paris.” The change also marks a momentous occasion for Wang as she is set to receive the prestigious Légion d’Honneur (France’s highest honor) on the same day as the film showing.

Wang also confessed some frustration with New York Fashion Week as we currently know it. “Part of the frustrating thing for me in New York, the calendar is so full now that it’s insane to try to get models and hair and makeup,”—a sentiment echoed by many big brands of late. “It’s a battle royale for everybody—stylists, model agencies—everybody is just crammed in.”

The designer has also been discontented with the lack of show locations: “That’s a limitation when you’re trying to express a point of view, or you have a certain kind of girl in your brain or guy in your brain.” Wang didn’t rule out or confirm a return to her native New York City for her next shows.
